I’m okay…

If you haven’t heard, there was this little thing called Irene that blew through the eastern United States yesterday. Unfortunately, Vermont got hammered.

I got most of my updates on Facebook as friends reported what was happening in their area. The city of Montpelier (my hometown) did a great job of keeping everyone updated.

Lots of folks have asked how we fared and I’m happy to report that we had no damage at all. Not a drop of water entered our home and we never lost power. I am beyond thankful.

I have been touched by everyone’s concern and kind words – it’s greatly appreciated.

I feel really helpless when I see all the devastation around me. I decided to help with the cleanup effort and will be at Kismet tomorrow. I’m trying to keep my week free so that I can volunteer more if needed.

The Red Cross is an obvious choice if you feel moved to make a donation to help with the relief efforts. Another great option is CERF+ (a.k.a. Craft Emergency Relief Fund).

From their website:

CERF+ is a national artists’ service organization whose mission is to safeguard and sustain the careers of craft artists and provide emergency resources that benefit all artists.

I can attest to the super-wonderfulness of this organization, as I worked there for 4.5 years. They helped lots of folks after Katrina and will surely do so after Irene. Your donation will go far in helping a craft artist get back on his or her feet.

And if you know of someone who could use help, please let them know that help is available.

Glad you’re OK. Yes, I was concerned about my Manhattanites, but I’m afraid it didn’t occur to me to wish you well!
And gold star for being one of the clean-up crew! Seriously, folk who mop up are brilliant. Go!helpers! 🙂

Diane –

I heard a lot today about the politics of getting help and it saddens me. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to help today – it helps me remember how lucky I am.

Montpelier wasn’t under water, but Richmond was – I bet that’s what your daughter saw. Their exit right off the interstate was majorly flooded. I drove by there on the day after the storm and there was water up to car windows. So sad.

So what do you think? I'd love to know!
