Book Arts Improv Book #4: Jump Your Junk

I finally completed my last book for the 2011 Book Arts Improv.

I’m feeling both sad and relieved. While the creative work is done, I still have to finish up the remaining books in three of the editions.

As for this week’s book, I couldn’t help but let my mind wander into naughty territory.

Here are the themes I was working with this week:

  • An unusual superpower: The power to remove foreign matter from your body or other people’s bodies at will
  • Something you hope to never find in a first aid kit: Cyanide pill
  • An inconvenient mode of transportation: Pogo stick

And here’s the finished product – my fourth miniature book, this one entitled Jump Your Junk:

The book is bound with a buttonhole binding. I don’t do this binding very often and it took a while to get back into it. I think that the silk thread I used was too slippery and it kept pulling out of my needle.

There’s a specific reason why I chose this binding, but I’m not going to tell you until later in this post.

Buttonhole bindingYet again, all of the images in the book were created using a linoleum cutter and Speedball Speedy-Carve. I made so many stamps over the past several weeks that I had to start storing them in their own plastic shoebox. They’re all very happy together.

Carving rubber stamps

I printed the text pages using Book Antiqua on kraft paper that I had saved over the years. Whenever I order bookcloth online, they always send it wrapped in kraft paper. I love the color and I can’t throw anything away, so I don’t.

Here’s the inside of the book, with the story interspersed with images of page spreads:

Joe was not enjoying his vacation.

Everyone around him was pointing and whispering.

It just made him want to kill himself.

A woman approached him.

It was clear that she was holding back a giggle.

“Please come with me.”

He followed her into the examination room.

“The doctor will be here in moment.”

He did not sit down.

She left the room and closed the door.

He could hear her laughing.

Ten minutes later, the doctor walked in.

“Hello, Joe. What brings you…

Joe cleared his throat.

“I’m in town for the annual Montpelier Naked Pogo Stick Ride…

…I had an accident.”

You are the doctor.

Please help Joe.

He needs you.

The streamers on the handles of the pogo stick are made of baker’s twine that I unraveled.

I am so in love with this book. There’s just something about an interactive ass/pogo stick story.

Oh – the reason behind the buttonhole binding.

Yes, I’m really that gross.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow to find out who wins the grand prize – a set of books that includes each of the four books created during the Improv.

Good luck to everyone!

You are hilarious! I laughed as I read the story and I don’t blame you for doing the buttonhole stitch. Just shows you have a very active mind, not gross at all. Or are we both … Nah! Great book.
