Celebration of the Book: Opening Reception

As I mentioned in this post, the Book Arts Guild of Vermont currently has an exhibit at the Firehouse Gallery in Burlington, VT – Celebration of the Book. I attended the opening reception this past Friday.

It’s amazing how different the books looked on display – there was an air of formality about it all.  I was disappointed to find that the curator did not choose to include my handling instructions with my book. Instead it was marked “Please do not touch“. I understand why the decision was made, but I was still bummed.

While at the reception, I encouraged folks to handle my book. It gave me some satisfaction. The show runs from September 5 – 30, 2008. Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area.

Here are some pictures from the show, starting with my entry:

Hello,

Thank you for including photos of the Opening…your panel book is equisite. I’m from New Jersey…yes a Jersey girl…and took the Paul Johnson workshop this summer whose work I really admire…and, sent a small piece up for the exhibit…a very small fairy tale book. So, seeing some of the work was great!!!

Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!!

Hi Maryann!

You must have made that sweet little book with the frog in it. I made special note of that book because I have been collecting frogs for as long as I can remember. I took Paul’s workshop last summer – boy, he’s a fast talker! His work and methods are really fascinating.

I actually took pictures of every book in the show, but I couldn’t fit them all into this post. I will be uploading them to the BAG Yahoo group so everyone can see them.

If only Vermont were an easy drive! I’d love to see that exhibit in person. Thanks for putting up photos so I can at least see a little of it virtually.

Hi Beth,

It really is a lovely exhibit. I’m working on a series of posts about Carol Barton this week, but when I’m done I’ll put up more images from the show.

By the way, it’s nice to meet you! I’m currently a subscriber of your blog and I’m always happy to make connections with other artists.

🙂 Elissa

So what do you think? I'd love to know!
