Workshops
I LOVE to teach.
I offer a range of bookbinding workshops appropriate for either students or teachers. I have worked in both traditional and non-traditional educational settings, art centers, and community festivals. Workshops are easily adapted to make them accessible to a variety of populations.
My goal is to provide students with as much information and guidance as possible, while at the same time offering them the freedom to explore and experiment. In my classes, I want students to feel both empowered and inspired by the work.
All of my bookbinding workshops provide the participants with a basic knowledge of bookbinding technique. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials used. Unless noted, workshops are open to students with all levels of experience.
Workshops that are currently scheduled are listed on my Events page.
I am available on both weekdays and weekends. Rates vary depending on preparation needs and project complexity. Materials fees are not included in rates.
- Private Instruction: $35.00 per hour, per person
- Workshops: $35.00 – $50.00 per hour, minimum 2 hours
- School Programs: $250.00 – $400.00 per day, plus travel

Know When to Fold ‘Em
The accordion book is a deceptively simple book structure. While the basic folded form is easy and quick to produce, it can be adapted into more complex and creative books. In this workshop, participants will create several books based on the accordion structure – the panel book, the flexagon, and the flag book. In addition, the structures will incorporate artist trading cards that will be created during the workshop.
In this workshop, each participant will leave class with four completed books. No previous experience required – this is a great class for a beginner.

Know When to Fold MORE of ‘Em
In this “sequel” to the Know When to Fold ‘Em workshop, participants will create several books based on the accordion structure – the nested accordion, the star book, and the tunnel book.
In this workshop, each participant will leave class with three completed books. No previous experience required (and you don’t need to take the first class in the series) – this is a great class for a beginner.

The Strappy Journal
Journals are great for so many things – exploring our creative selves, recording dreams and feelings, documenting travels, or preserving details of our daily lives. Why not make a journal of your own, just the way you want it – it’s easy!
In this workshop, we will use a binding that allows the book to remain flat when opened, making it perfect for use as a sketchbook or journal. No previous experience necessary.

The Peek-a-Boo Journal
In this workshop, participants will create a journal with a double-needle coptic binding, an intricate stitch that will be visible on the spine of the book. Not only is the coptic binding beautiful, but it also allows books to remain flat when opened. The book covers will include a cut-out window, which offers many opportunities for personalization – photos, pressed flowers, theater tickets – if it’s flat, you can use it.
In this workshop, each participant will leave class with a completed book. Some bookbinding or sewing experience is helpful, but not required.

The Handmade Photo Album
In this workshop, you will learn how to create an elegant hard-cover photo album using bookcloth and handmade paper – this is a wonderful keepsake that can hold 4” x 6” photos from your recent vacation or family holiday gathering.
Each participant will leave class with a completed photo album. No previous experience required – this is a great class for a beginner. You can even bring in your own cover materials to customize your book.

The Recycled Accordion Book
You don’t have to spend lots of money on supplies to make a book – your recycle bin offers lots of creative possibilities! In this workshop, we will create an accordion book using recycled papers, books, and other found materials. This structure can stand up and be stretched out, making it perfect for display.
In this workshop, each participant will leave the class with a completed book. No previous experience is required – this is a great class for a beginner.

The Star Book

This beautiful, three-dimensional book is sure to capture the imagination! Don’t let this book’s appearance fool you – it’s much easier to create than it looks.
In this workshop, participants will create a star book made from layers of paper and collage materials. The book opens up completely to form a star shape when the covers are held back-to-back. You can use the attached ribbon ties to secure the book when open or closed.
In this workshop, each participant will leave class with a completed book. No previous experience required – this is a great class for all skill levels.

Book Arts Open Studio
This experimental workshop is like a mini retreat, where students who have taken some book arts classes in the past can explore taking their artist books to a new level. Enjoy the creative environment of working with other artists – it’s like a book arts play date!
In this workshop, I’ll share several of my one-of-a-kind artist books and provide some insights into how I created them. I will share my skills and strategies with students in order to coach students to conceive of and create their own one-of-a-kind art book. The workshop will include a discussion of the relationship between a book’s structure and content.
The use of both standard and unconventional materials will be demonstrated, along with creative ways to apply them to the book arts. A wide range of tools and materials will be available for you to try, including collage, carved block stamps, image transfer, Dremel, and paper cutting. Different binding techniques will also be explored.
This workshop is best-suited to someone with previous book arts experience.

We’ll also be greening up the atmosphere by using recycled materials. The knowledge you will gain from this workshop can be applied to many other art forms.
