Workshop Descriptions

The Travel Companion Journal

Handmade Travel Journal

Not only does travel offer you the opportunity to experience culture and adventure, but also the opportunity to invest in yourself. A travel journal is a wonderful way to create a tangible memory of your journey.

In this workshop, participants will create a journal with a double-needle Coptic binding, an intricate stitch that will be visible on the spine of the book. Not only is the Coptic binding beautiful, but it also allows books to remain flat when opened.

The journal will include pockets both inside the covers and in the text block, allowing you the opportunity to save lots of stuff from your travels – tickets, photos, pressed flowers – you name it! Participants are encouraged to bring small photos, paper ephemera, and/or other flat items to decorate the covers.

In this two-day workshop, each participant will leave class with a completed book and a basic knowledge of bookbinding technique. Some bookbinding or sewing experience is helpful, but not required.

Leather Pocket Journals

Handmade leather journals

Do you love the smell of leather? Then this workshop’s for you! In this workshop, you’ll learn 5 bindings that use only leather, paper, and thread – no glue needed! For each binding, you will sew 3 sections of folded papers into covers cut from one piece of leather. These bindings are very flexible and allow the books to open completely flat, making them perfect for use as sketchbooks or journals.

Each sewing technique creates a different decorative sewing pattern on the spine and we will try out different closure methods. No previous experience is required – this is a great class for a beginner. You can even bring in your own leather to customize your book.

Book Arts Open Studio

This experimental workshop is like a mini retreat, where students who have taken some book arts classes in the past can explore taking their artist books to a new level. Enjoy the creative environment of working with other artists – it’s like a book arts play date!

In this workshop, I’ll share several of my one-of-a-kind artist books and provide some insights into how I created them. I will share my skills and strategies with students in order to coach students to conceive of and create their own one-of-a-kind art book. The workshop will include a discussion of the relationship between a book’s structure and content.

Multi-media accordion book

The use of both standard and unconventional materials will be demonstrated, along with creative ways to apply them to the book arts. Different binding techniques will also be explored.

In this workshop, each participant will leave class with an accordion book and technique sample cards. This workshop is best-suited to someone with previous book arts experience.

Know When to Fold ‘Em

The accordion book is a deceptively simple book structure. While the basic folded form is easy and quick to produce, it can be adapted into more complex and creative books. In this workshop, participants will create several books based on the accordion structure – the panel book, the flexagon, and the flag book. In addition, the structures will incorporate artist trading cards that will be created during the workshop.

In this workshop, each participant will leave class with four completed books. No previous experience required – this is a great class for a beginner.

Star Book

3-D Star & Tunnel Books

These beautiful, three-dimensional books are sure to capture the imagination! Don’t let the appearance of these books fool you – they’re much easier to create than it looks.

Participants will create the books from layers of paper and collage materials. The star book opens up completely to form a star shape when the covers are held back-to-back. You can use the attached ribbon ties to secure the book when open or closed. The tunnel book has pages suspended between two, thin folded accordions. Openings in the pages allow you to see through the book to the back, creating layers of depth.

In this workshop, each participant will leave class with two completed books. You might feel more comfortable having some previous bookbinding experience in this workshop, but it is not required.

Paste Paper Gift Wrap

paste papers

Tired of the same old gift wrap? Then this class is for you! Paste papers are made by applying a mixture of paint and pigment to damp paper and then using tools to create pattern and texture on the surface. Different methods will be demonstrated to guide you as you create your own paste papers with vibrant colors. We’ll use methyl cellulose in a paste recipe that’s easy to recreate on your own. We’ll be working with acid-free paper, so you can even use the papers in your bookmaking or other craft projects.
