This experimental workshop is like a mini retreat, where students who have taken some book arts classes in the past can explore taking their artist books to a new level. Enjoy the creative environment of working with other artists – it’s like a book arts play date!
In this 3-part workshop, I’ll share several of my one-of-a-kind artist books and provide some insights into how I created them. I will share my skills and strategies with students in order to coach students to conceive of and create their own one-of-a-kind art book. The workshop will include a discussion of the relationship between a book’s structure and content.
The use of both standard and unconventional materials will be demonstrated, along with creative ways to apply them to the book arts. A wide range of tools and materials will be available for you to try, including collage, carved block stamps, image transfer, Dremel, and paper cutting. Different binding techniques will also be explored.
Participants are encouraged to bring materials/tools for use in their books. Additional materials will be available for use during the class, some of which will be available for purchase (due to expense). Please contact SPA for a suggested materials list.
You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. This workshop is best-suited to someone with previous book arts experience.

Mixed Media Card Marathon Studio Place Arts (SPA) | Barre, VT | February 3, 2012
Friday February 3, 2012: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (1/2 hour lunch break)
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner … and aren’t there some special birthdays and anniversaries that you would like to honor? This workshop celebrates the art of the handmade greeting! Different materials and methods will be demonstrated to guide you as you create your own personalized cards – mixed media techniques include collage, carved block stamps, image transfer, and pop-up techniques. We’ll also be greening up our earth by using recycled materials.
The knowledge you will gain from this workshop can be applied to many other art forms. Participants are encouraged to bring materials/tools for use in their cards. Additional materials will be available for use during the class.
In this intensive workshop, each participant will leave the class with 6 – 10 completed cards. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. No previous experience is required – this is a great class for a beginner.
Cost: SPA members $55.00 / Non-members $65.00

Book Arts Intensive Studio Place Arts (SPA) | Barre, VT | February 20, 2012
Tuesday, February 20, 2012: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (1/2 hour lunch break)
This one-day, intensive workshop will provide participants with the basics for making a variety of artist books. The workshop will emphasize the accordion book, a deceptively simple book structure. While the basic folded form is easy and quick to produce, it can be adapted into more complex and creative books. In this workshop, participants will create several books based on the accordion structure – the basic accordion, panel book, the flexagon, and the flag book. In addition, the structures will incorporate artist trading cards that will be created during the workshop.
Participants are encouraged to bring materials/tools for both decorating the book covers and creating the artist trading cards. Additional materials will be available for use during the class. In this workshop, each participant will leave class with four completed books and a basic knowledge of bookbinding technique. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. No previous experience required – this is a great class for a beginner.
Cost: Members $55.00 /Non-Members $65.00
Materials fee: $10.00
Supplies: Awl, bonefolder, ruler, X-Acto knife or utility knife, cutting mat, scissors, pencil, glue brush, glue stick.
- Note: Bring the the supplies if you have them – don’t feel obligated to buy anything. I’ll have extras available.
Optional materials/tools: Collage materials (small bits of handmade paper, fabric, fibers, etc.), photos, rubber stamps and pads, markers, pens, colored pencils, and decorative scissors.
- Note: These materials will be used for creating content for your books.
